my natural shot is a slight fade but this year w/ my driver ive had a humongous fade/slice. im 13 and i just finished baseball… i think my baseball swing is messing me up. A guy told me tht im putting side spin on the golf ball by swinging on an out to in swing plane. ive tried swinging on a in to out plane but its not consistant and its low to the ground.
please leave tips and links 2 videos for helping my golf swing! i apprechiate it!
I used to hit a fade and now I hit a slight draw. The easiest way to think about hitting it straight is thinking about taking the club straight back and finishing straight through. Someone once told me the first 6 inches of the backswing decide the spin of the ball. Put a stick or a make a line going straight behind the ball and make sure your plane follows it back for the first 6 inches. That is what I did and I hit 80% of fairways. Think about kicking a ball. The direction your foot goes back and finishes through the ball sets the spin.
Basically this is the problem:
I used to be able to drive a ball pretty far (250 - 280 yards) and straight with the exact same driver that I have now. However, that was about 2 years ago, now I have a major slice on my shots (they can literally end up 10-50 yards right of my target line) and the course I play is very narrow. Also I’ve lost distance my drives are now in the region of 180-240 yards (probably something to do with the slice).
I’ve tried a couple of changes to my swing, stance and pre-shot routine and I’m stronger than I was two years ago but still the slice and lack of distance continue. Any tips or good advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks
Lessons are always helpful, so is an equipment change. I personally have 4 drivers, switch back and forth when I need to. I also this year found a matching 3 and 5 wood to my Burrows MAC driver. I have two hybrid irons and will be picking up a Titleist 15 degree hybrid iron as an additional weapon on the tee. Depending on the manufacturer, I can find hybrid clubs from virtually anywhere. The 15 degree hybrid will replace my 1 iron and two iron.
Keep the driver if you like it, get or try demos, use fairway woods, hybrid irons off the tee. Most importantly, just what a pro answered, is get lessons. While in lessons the PGA pro you visit, might also find the driver you did have is wrong for you. Do not give up and keep on hitting the fairways.
I can’t seem to get my body and right foot to turn when I swing my golf clubs, I don’t know if I am swinging too hard or what, I used to do this well but now I look like that scottish dude on the Tiger Woods games, my feet just stay planted and nothing turns, I believe this is why I slice. Any tips?
You have to get your hips though. you hips are what leads you body, arms and your foot. Also you get most of your power from this. Try hitting the ball like normal, but after you have stuck the ball, make your hips become parallel to your target. This should help.
In order to fix an inside-out slice in golf, the golfer needs to use his body and avoid rushing when he gets to the top of his swing. Learn how to slow down to fix bad golf swings with help from a member of the PGA National Teaching Committee in this free video on golf slices.

I’m brand new to golf and played my first game today. I played on an 18 hole, par 70 course and hit 118. I’ve only been to the driving range once before playing today so I was expecting to do pretty bad. My girlfriends brother played with me and shot a 75 while giving me a few tips but he pretty much let me go after begging me to come play.
I have to say I loved it and want some tips on getting better. How bad is 118 for a first time? I only hit par on one hole and kept hitting the top of the ball. That was my main problem, getting solid contact.
My second problem was a crazy curve I was hitting while driving. I think he told me it was a slice and it was going to the right.
I know this will all come with time, but I don’t want to go practicing at the driving range and do something wrong the whole time.
Thanks for any tips. I was pretty nervous to go out with one day of practice my entire life but I feel like I could get the hang of it. Should I stick to the driving range for a while or try a 3 par course nearby?
Welcome to golf!
There are really two ways you can go about getting better. The first is to get lessons from a PGA certified professional teacher. They really know what they are doing and cut down the learning curve significantly. Prices range from $35-$100+ for a lesson depending on the pro. Try to find one in your budget that you get along with.
The second, if a teacher isn’t feasible, is to emulate a good swing. Get yourself a full length mirror and a video camera. Find a professional golfer with a similar build to yourself and try to emulate their swing. Seeing your own swing and adjusting accordingly is the quickest way to improve by yourself if you don’t have a teacher, because you are taking all the guesswork out of it.
Another piece of advice…. keep playing. On course experience is very good. 118 is average for a first round. Go to the driving range and keep practicing, but most of all work on your short game. This is from about 80 yards and in. This is where the fundamentals of your swing are really learned and where strokes are really saved. About 50-80% of your time should be spent putting and chipping, to improve the quickest.
Good luck, enjoy the game!
In golf, a slice is a ball that curves from the left to the right, for a right-handed golfer. Discover how a golf ball slices because it is spinning in a counter-clockwise motion with help from a member of the PGA National Teaching Committee in this free video on golf slices.

to start off my main sport is baseball, golf is just a weekend hobby i’ve been doing for the past ten or so years.
I always can hit my irons great and straight when I go out but I always slice my drive. any tips?
I’ve tried playing the ball back in my stance, foward in my stance, tighter grip, nothing seems to work. My driver shaft is a normal flex does that have anything to do with it?
you probably have a few baseball tendencies stuck in your head. First, you need to loosen your grip, on a scale of 1-10 you want to hold a driver at about a 4. Then you want to make sure from your driving stance, you can see the first 2 knuckles on your top hand. Most importantly, you are probably suffering from an out to in swing, to prevent that, drop your back shoulder a bit, keep it tight. Lastly, just swing 5 times softer than you think you should, remember, the golf club is an extension to your body. Good luck
I played golf for the second time in a year and was curious as to what I can do with my hands and body to keep the head straight to avoid slicing and hooking? Also, Is it true that as you go from driver down the irons (ie driver, 2I, 3I, 4I…) your stance should draw inside a little closer? General advice on swinging properly or tips in general? I need all the help I can get. I didn’t do too bad but I wasn’t very consistent. One last question, is it worth working with those swing trainers…the ones where the shaft is supposed to show you how to adjust your swing to be better?
Grip the club with a neutral hand placement, emulate a proper swing plane and you should improve drastically . You are cluttering your mind with too much information . If you are so uncertain of your swing, go back to square 1 and take a couple of basic swing lessons.
