I’m 23 years old, pretty athletic, just got out of college and just started playing the game last year. I went about 8 times last year and this year already 20 times or so. I’ve never had lessons but want to get some this summer. When I started I was shooting 110’s and each time I go I have been getting better, Last 5 rounds from least to most recent are 98, 94, 103, 90, 92.
I have been feeling like I get better every time.
My driver can be inconsistent as I had a slice, then straight, then hook, and straight, and now most are either hooking or pretty straight, I drive usually between 220-260.
I don’t use my fairway woods too often unless I want to punch them through but once in awhile I do and they’re ok.
I have a 3i and 4i hybrid, I use my 3i and it’s so so and will go 200.
My 5 and 6 irons are ok and if they miss it’s usually a hook.
My 7 iron is 75 percent straight.
My 8 iron is 80 percent straight
My 9 iron, PW, and SW are my best clubs.
My SW is my best club, if i’m 75 yards and out I feel confident in hitting the green 85-90 percent of the time or damn near close. Also my PW feels very solid around 100 yards I’ll also hit the green 90 percent of the time.
I usually have trouble in the sand since I don’t hit there much and haven’t had much practice.
I am ok at putting and know that I should focus on that quite a bit. In a round I probably 3-putt 4 or 5 times. But I usually feel very confident in my touch and 2 putting.
I know I need to work on hitting in the fairways because I can get in some trouble here and there. I really should work on my chipping more but I feel so good with the sand wedge to pitch it every time. My long clubs, especially driver need more work to hit the dreaded straight ball. Besides that I guess that’s about it.

What do you guys think?

Good read I bet ha and thanks in advance!

Hey. Im 16 and I am a 3 handicap. I shoot in the low mid 70’s consitantley. Sorry to say I started when I was 2 years old. Ok, but really the most important thing in golf is practice. I have had one lesson and it was last year. Johnson Wagners coach Bobby Hiens, but the short game(putting, wedge) is the most important part of the game. Get a lesson to fix your driver to elminate the slice or hook. Hooking it means you are swinging to hard or coming across on the ball, slice you are not making a full turn. Go to youtube and check out the swing visions of the pros, thats what I do. Practice makes perfect my man. I sit at the range for 2 hours each day, then at the putting green for 2. I understand you dont have all the time I do. But really go to the range when you can and work on 100 yards and in. Drive for the show, putt for the dough.

Being consist or taking the risk?

Posted by admin

Hello, so I was wondering is it better to be consist or to take the risk? Let me explain. So I'm very consist with my irons, but i usually 30/70 my woods. Which usually slice horribly! I can actually only hit my 5 wood 30/70, but with a good hit I can usually hit 260 yards. At the moment I play boggy golf. I've tried everything lessons, one on one, practice, and etc. So at the moment I just try to stick to my irons. Is it worth making a fool out of myself on the course, or sticking to my irons? Oh btw any tips on how to prevent slicing is much appreciated.

ok funny story, I've aimmed 75 degrees to the left and from that point i still sliced about 120 degrees right ><

To answer your first question, be consistent. Work on your woods at the driving range, but practice course management while playing. Hit a good drive with whatever club you can do it with, then take a good solid second shot (and third if you're on a par 5), then controlled approach shot, then aim to no more than two putt.

If you get off the fairway, don't try the hero shot. Wedge it back out of trouble, advancing it if you can but don't feel bad about needing to go out sideways sometimes.

Trust me, you might think the guys bombing it miles into the rough are laughing at you, but they're not. They will actually be jealous that you are walking right down the middle and hitting the clubs you need to hit. If you want to shave a stroke off, work on the 9i and wedges to get control with them so you can knock it close and one putt (work on your putting too).

Trust me, I used to be the bomber with no control. Now I play controlled shots down the middle, have dropped many shots off the score card, and usually beat most of the guys I play with.

I hit my short irons (6 iron through pw) just fine, but I cannot hit my longer shafted clubs (driver through 5 iron). I constantly shank or slice the longer shafted clubs, which makes me think that you DO have to swing DIFFERENTLY since I hit my short clubs straight and long. Whats going on? I know I should take lessons but I am hoping for some baseline tips.

Ive been doing some reading, and maybe I should replace my 19 degree 3 hybrid with a higher lofted 5wood or 7wood. I dunno.

The tempo for the normal shot hit with each club should be the same, whether you are hitting the 3 wood , driver or 3 iron. Your swing plane will change from a slight reach with the longer shafted clubs to a more upright swing plane as the shafts get progressively shorter. Before you go replacing clubs be sure you know how to use them. The good mechanic can perform with any box of tools.
